Roanoke Rapids police Chief Bobby Martin reported on Thursday shortly before 10 p.m. Officer J. Melvin was conducting traffic enforcement in the area of Hinson and South Monroe streets when he observed the driver of a vehicle coming towards him at a rate appearing faster than the posted limit.
The driver was later identified as Quincy Vann Jr., 22, of the Roanoke Rapids area.
Following the traffic stop, the officer reportedly noticed the strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle.
Vann was asked to step out of the vehicle and a subsequent search yielded 2.3 grams of a powdery substance believed to be fentanyl.
Melvin placed Vann under arrest and carried him before a magistrate. He was charged with possession of schedule II and received a $5,000 bond. He has a July 7 court date.
North Carolina State Highway Patrol Trooper H. Wheeler assisted.
No mugshot of Vann was available.
