A man with numerous pending cases is now wanted in a shooting which occurred on Heritage Lane outside Roanoke Rapids Monday night.

Chief Deputy Scott Hall of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office said Katoe Wardell Harris Jr., 23, of Roanoke Rapids, is wanted for assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.

Harris is known to frequent the Roanoke Rapids and Gaston areas, Hall said.

The victim in the shooting is in stable condition after he was transported to Vidant North by private vehicle and then to a trauma center for further treatment.

Deputies learned the victim was shot in the legs and torso area.

Detective Brian Biggerstaff developed Harris as the reputed suspect in the case after further investigation of the shooting, which occurred around 6 p.m.

The shooting occurred outside. Hall said investigators believe the person who was shot was the intended victim.

Motive remains under investigation.

Most recently Harris was charged in December in an overdose death in Roanoke Rapids which occurred in June of last year.

In January the sheriff’s office drew warrants for his arrest on drug charges as well as assault on a female in a case in which he was shot.

The sheriff’s office narcotics division has described Harris as a reputed mid-level drug dealer who frequents South Rosemary and the Highway 48 area.

He has court dates scheduled in August and January on an array of charges.
