Chief Deputy Scott Hall of the sheriff’s office said in a statement deputies were notified of a breaking and entering which occurred at the shelter shortly before 3:15 a.m.

The sheriff’s office received notification that Broadnax was fleeing the scene in a Lincoln passenger vehicle.

Deputy Alex Wood spotted a vehicle matching the suspect vehicle at Highway 158 near the Highway 48 intersection.

Wood turned around in an attempt to stop the vehicle and the driver failed to stop and fled west on Highway 158.

The vehicle continued west on Highway 158 and ran off of the roadway just west of Oak Grove Church Road where it was involved in a single-car collision.

Broadnax climbed from the wreckage and fled on foot a short distance before Deputy Wood and Corporal Richie White apprehended him.

Broadnax was taken to Vidant North where he was treated and later released.

After his release from medical care, Broadnax was charged with felony speed to elude arrest, resist, obstruct and delay, drive left of center, speeding, reckless driving, fail to wear a seat belt, and driving with a revoked license.

Roanoke Rapids police charged him with first-degree burglary, attempted kidnapping, common law robbery, larceny of a motor vehicle, assault on a female, misdemeanor larceny, and possession of stolen goods.
