The percentage of positive COVID-19 cases in Halifax County has nearly doubled since last week’s report, according to the health department.

That number is now at 12.4 percent when last week it was at 6.5 percent.

The health department added an additional death related to the virus, which brings the number to 146.

With 153 new positive cases added in the latest report, the total number of positive cases since March of last year is 8,380. The county remains in the red category, which reflects a high level of community spread.

“Regretfully, but as projected, we are experiencing another spike in cases and percent positives with COVID-19 related illnesses,” health department Director Bruce Robistow said. “The combination of holiday gatherings, more indoor gatherings as a whole and lack of citizens getting vaccinated is once again culminating in a COVID situation that is once again difficult to manage.”

Robistow said the Omicron variant has proven to be highly contagious and the Delta variant remains active. “It continues to be critically important for everyone to get vaccinated so that we can gain control of COVID-19 moving forward. All COVID vaccines remain readily available throughout Halifax County and I would recommend anyone who is not vaccinated to please do so.”

In the interim, he said, continue to practice the Three Ws — handwashing, waiting six-feet apart, and wearing a facial covering.
