The city’s Benevolent Awards and Recognition Committee honored three students of employees with scholarships during Tuesday night’s council meeting.

Elizabeth Shelton

Shelton, who was not present, is the step-daughter of Safety Coordinator Walter Johnson and the daughter of Tammy Johnson.

She is a 2022 Graduate of Victory Christian Academy and was the valedictorian of her class.

She wants to pursue a major in nursing at East Carolina University and ultimately obtain her masters in nursing.

Remarks about Shelton include she is a leader in her classes at school and sets high goals for herself. “Her integrity is impeccable. She has a friendly and inviting personality. She is a deep and critical thinker with a genuine heart and smile and love for education.”

Grace Storey

Storey is the daughter of City Clerk Traci Storey and Tra Storey.

She is a 2022 graduate of Halifax Academy.

She wants to major in chemistry at North Carolina State University and pursue a career in cosmetic dentistry.

Remarks about Storey include she is a young lady of unlimited academic potential and remarkable social grace. “Grace is the epitome of an active, well-rounded student. Grace is an outstanding student and individual who willingly supports others. She is a pleasure to be around and her positive attitude and belief in herself, even in the face of difficulty, is an excellent asset.

Morgan May

May is the daughter of police Administrative Assistant Tina May and Phillip May.

She is a 2022 graduate of Roanoke Rapids High School.

May wants to pursue an associates degree in medical office coding and administration.

Remarks about May include she has set forth goals, shown ambition and follows through with the expectations she has made for herself. “She has turned her experiences into teaching lessons for others and encourages others that the decisions you make today will follow you the rest of your life. Morgan has had many challenges and has overcome them with determination, hard work, dedication, and a smile. She is sincere, charismatic, thoughtful, caring, and loves to dance.”

Kappa Iota Omega Chapter Day

Council also recognized the KIO Chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority proclaiming June 29 as Kappa Iota Omega Chapter Day.

June 29 marks the 48th anniversary of the chapter, which was chartered in Winton.

The proclamation read by Mayor Emery Doughtie says the chapter currently consists of 91 women who are educators, administrators, healthcare providers, public and government officials as well as “leaders, entrepreneurs and productive citizens within Halifax and Northampton counties and beyond.”

The document says the chapter “has made an indelible impact in the lives of individuals from all aspects of life,” which include efforts in education, science, technology and math, political action and health awareness and prevention as well as other activities.

It has volunteered and financially supported many organizations such as the John 3:16 Center, American Red Cross blood drives and the Sarah Keys Evans public art project. “The chapter and individual members have received awards and most recently … the chapter was acknowledged as one of the best of the best chapters in the Mid-Atlantic region of Alpha Kappa Alpha and was awarded runner-up for overall programs during the 2021 calendar year.”
