The Roanoke Rapids Fire Department announced three new hires and three promotions during Tuesday’s city council meeting and presented their badges to the six firefighters.

Chief Jason Patrick said Tyler Moseley, who has been with the department since July of last year has received his firefighter certification, emergency vehicle driver certification and traffic incident management certification.

From Jarratt, he is a second generation firefighter with that department where he currently holds a captain position.

In Roanoke Rapids he is assigned to B-shift at Station 2.

His father, Timothy Moseley, the Jarratt fire chief for 11 years, placed the badge on his son’s uniform.

Jarrod Wood was hired in November and his certifications include firefighter, emergency vehicle driver, and medical responder.

From Littleton, Wood has served with the Littleton and Macon fire departments for 10 years. He is a second generation firefighter whose father served with the Suffolk Fire Department.

He is assigned to A-shift at Station 1.

His mother, Cathy Wood, placed the badge on her son’s uniform.

Matt Cope was hired in June and achieved his firefighter certification along with TIMS. He is currently working on his emergency vehicle driver certification. He served for more than eight years with the Amelia County Fire Department in Virginia before coming to the area.

He is assigned to C-shift at Station 1.

His girlfriend, Stephanie Daily, placed the badge on his uniform.

Darrell Sanders was promoted to engineer and he is certified as a firefighter, driver-operator for pumps and aerials and medical responder.

He has been with the fire department for six years and is also a member of the Halifax Fire Department.

Patrick said Sanders has spent many days and evenings over the last year obtaining his driver-operator pumps and aerials certification.

He is assigned to B-shift at Station 2.

His fiancee, Allyson Bounds, placed his badge on his uniform.

Hunter Whitmire was promoted to engineer. His certifications include firefighter, driver-operator pumps and aerials and medical responder.

He spent nine years with the Gaston Fire Department. He has been with the department for two years.

His mother, Tina Whitmire, placed the badge on his uniform.

Darrell Miles was promoted to lieutenant.

His certifications include firefighter, fire officer, fire instructor, medical responder, and hazmat tech.

He has been with the department for eight years.

He currently serves on the North Carolina Regional Hazmat Team, which responds to situations throughout the area.

He is assigned to A-shift at Station 1.

His wife, Paula, placed his badge on his uniform.

Patrick said the certifications he noted during the meeting were but a few of what the firefighters have accomplished throughout their careers.

Mayor Emery Doughtie congratulated the firefighters. “You are always on call. It gives us a good feeling you are always there when the need comes. We’re really proud of you and appreciate your dedication.”
