Tommy Daughtry Jr. was installed as the newest member of Roanoke Rapids City Council Tuesday night.

Daughtry is filling the unexpired term of Suetta Scarbrough, who resigned from her District 1 seat for health reasons.

Daughtry was appointed to the seat earlier this month.

“I feel honored to have been chosen to represent the district I’m in,” he said following the meeting. “I’ve been in Roanoke Rapids all my life. It has always been home to me.”

Daughtry retired from Dominion as an overseer of contractors.

One of his goals on council, he said, is, “I would really like to see this theater thing settled and see the town get back on a fiscal footing and get some of this money straight so we won’t be so strapped down.”

Daughtry said he has been overwhelmed by the support he has received since his name first came up as a potential appointee. “I cannot believe the support ⏤ people calling me when they heard I was thinking about it. They’ve just been very supportive and told me I would do a great job.”

He said even when he entered the Lloyd Andrews City Meeting Hall he saw several people he wasn’t expecting out to support him. “I was overwhelmed. My family has been a big support. My pastor at (Victory Baptist) church has been a big supporter.”
