A Roanoke Rapids man who reportedly blew twice the state’s legal alcohol limit of .08 was caught Friday driving while holding his 2-year-old toddler.

Lieutenant Shane Guyant of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office said the investigating corporal also learned that Shaun Rawhem Whitehead, 44, had drugs in the vehicle and was driving on a revoked license.

Corporal R. Marshall conducted the stop around 2 a.m. Friday after observing Whitehead was operating the vehicle without tail lights or any visible license plate while he drove on Highway 158 near Community Drive.

After the stop Marshall observed that Whitehead was holding the toddler in his arms. Guyant said Marshall could detect the odor of alcohol and learned the vehicle was not registered and Whitehead lost his driving privileges after he failed to appear in court last year.

Whitehead was arrested for driving while impaired and later registered a blood alcohol content of .16

Marshall located marijuana, cocaine and amphetamine and dextroamphetamine pills which were all packaged for sale.

The child was turned over to social services.
