A Roanoke Rapids woman who police say stole more than $700 worth of merchandise from Walmart Tuesday was arrested and charged along with a man who had no involvement in the case but ran when he saw law enforcement.

Roanoke Rapids police Chief Bobby Martin said the events which led to the arrests of Jalissa Slade, who was charged in the larceny, and Jermaine Hockaday, who fled, began shortly before 6:45 p.m. when Officer T. Acree was dispatched to the department store on the larceny call.

Store management gave the officer the direction that the woman later identified as Slade was headed with a cart full of merchandise.

Acree was in the area of Mullen Drive when he heard noises coming from the back of a shed. He noticed a 43-inch TV and the Enfield woman running toward Fourth Avenue.

Meanwhile, upon collecting the television, Sergeant M. Worrell advised she saw the man later identified as Hockaday running near a vape store.

Acree and Worrell encountered Hockaday, 37, of Roanoke Rapids, who had no involvement in the larceny but did have an outstanding warrant for his arrest on a probation violation.

Master Officer J. Melvin located Slade in front of It’s Fashion and took her into custody. Officers learned Slade had an outstanding order for arrest from Edgecombe County for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.

The $727.26 worth of merchandise, which was returned to the store, was as follows:

A 43-inch ONN TV

A 43-inch Hisense TV

Power XL Air fryer

Shower floral

Better Homes and Garden Cozy Blanket Kit

Mainstay blender

Disney Activity Table

Towel bath sheet

Dove Body Wash

Oil of Olay Body Wash

Two Dove soap bars

Three Degree deodorants

Two Mainstay shower curtains

Energizer AAA batteries.

Slade received a $2,000 secured bond for the larceny charges and a $1,000 secured bond for the warrant.  Slade has a Friday court date.

Hockaday was jailed without the opportunity for bond and has a March 3 court date.
