A homeowner fired a shot at an intruder late Tuesday night during a residential burglary in the 1100 block of Carolina Avenue, according to the Roanoke Rapids Police Department.

Chief Bobby Martin said the intruder was not struck by the gunfire. He said the elderly occupants of the residence “were not injured but obviously shaken up.”

Officer N. Powell and other members of C Squad responded to the residence after receiving a burglary in progress call shortly before midnight.

Master Officer S. Langley reported to Powell he observed a vehicle leaving the area that may have been involved in the burglary. A check of the vehicle and its occupants determined there was no involvement.

The elderly victims told officers that a person described as a Black male entered the home through a sliding glass door.

The victims heard the intruder and yelled at him, demanding he leave. That’s when the homeowner fired a shot.

The suspect fled the area. He is described as standing 6-feet tall and wearing all black.

A canine track by Detective C. Batchelor and his dog Rudy did not locate the suspect.
