An estimated $100,000 in damages was reported after heavy equipment was stolen from the area of Cedarwood Cemetery Sunday.

During the investigation, Roanoke Rapids police learned other equipment in the area of Thirteenth Street had been broken into and moved, Chief Bobby Martin said.

Martin said officers learned of the damages shortly before 5 p.m. after receiving a report. They were told a front-end loader had been taken from the Cedarwood Cemetery area and driven away.

The loader is owned by a private local company and the excavator that was broken into as well as other equipment was the property of another company.

During the investigation officers observed three juveniles covered in mud, spoke with them and discovered they were responsible for the damages.

Officers located the loader and discovered several other pieces of equipment had been damaged.

One of the juveniles has been identified as the suspect, Martin said, and investigators are seeking charges of two counts of felony larceny, breaking and entering a motor vehicle and damage to property.

During this investigation officers also recovered several fishing rods that were related to a breaking and entering in the 100 block of Monroe Street and officers are working on charges for that crime as well.

Police continue to investigate and anyone with information is encouraged to contact the department at 252-533-2810 or Crimestoppers at 252-583-4444.
