The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office has a person of interest in a Sunday morning shooting which caused damage to a Roanoke Rapids attorney’s vehicle.

Attorney Jamal Summey said he was with a client in the area of Matthews Street and Branch Avenue when the shots were fired. “It’s really sad that in broad daylight somebody starts shooting at you,” he said.

Summey was preparing for a case with his client, who the attorney believes was the intended target. “Something has to be done about guns on the streets.”

While Lieutenant Shane Guyant said investigators can’t say whether the attorney or his client was the intended target, they do believe it was an intentional shooting.

The shooting occurred around 10:30 a.m. and surveillance video showed a man wearing a dark hooded coat and a black mask covering his face from the nose down. He was wearing jeans with a blue bandanna covering his left knee. The man appeared to be holding a black rifle.

Domestic assault

On Monday deputies responded to the Roanoke Rapids Police Department to speak with a victim who said she had been held at gunpoint and assaulted on Suzanne Circle in the Roanoke Rapids area.

Guyant said deputies learned that Cadaryl Carter, 36, of Roanoke Rapids had come to the victim’s home and put a gun to her head threatening to kill her.

Carter took the victim’s cell phone and made her drive him to a store on West Tenth Street for cigarettes.

Once Carter got out of the car the victim drove away and went directly to the Roanoke Rapids Police Department for help.

Deputies located Carter inside the victim’s residence. It appears that he had walked back there after being left at the store.

Deputy C. Roberts arrested and charged Carter with second-degree kidnapping, larceny from a person, domestic assault on a female, assault by pointing a gun, communicating threats, and resist, delay and obstruct.

He was jailed without the opportunity for bond due to the domestic nature of the case and has a Thursday district court date.

Armed robbery arrest

Mahkhi Khalil Bynum, who was wanted in several armed robberies, remains in the Halifax County Detention Center on a $986,000 bond and awaits a Thursday district court date on the heist charges.

Guyant said Detective Sergeant J. Pignanello arrested the 21-year-old Enfield man on Friday — charging him with the January 18 robbery of the Highway 48 Family Dollar.

He was also wanted for two armed robberies in Roanoke Rapids.

Guyant said the sheriff’s office has been working closely with the police departments of Roanoke Rapids, Enfield and Gaston on similar robberies. The state court calendar does not yet show any Northampton County charges but does show Bynum faces four Halifax County armed robbery charges as well as three convicted felon in possession of a weapon counts.

Bynum was also served with an outstanding order for arrest for a felony probation violation. Guyant said he was on probation for larceny of a firearm, breaking or entering a motor vehicle, and possession of a stolen firearm.
