Roanoke Valley law enforcement reported the following:

Northampton County Sheriff’s Office

Captain Patrick Jacobs said on March 22 shortly after 7:30 p.m. officers responded to a shooting outside Rich Square.

A man was shot and later transported to a hospital for treatment of injuries that were not life-threatening.

Investigation by Detective Sergeant J. Barmer with assistance from Rich Square police Chief W. Smith determined occupants of a vehicle fired shots.

Smith later located the vehicle, which was disabled and three people ran when law enforcement approached. A canine search resulted in the location of the men hiding in an unoccupied vehicle. A further search with assistance from the canine, Thor, located an AK-47, AR-15 and a cell phone.

Three men were arrested on the scene — Malik Adams, 27, Jamarion Gilliam, 21, and Amun-tehu Serkh Erat Benu, 24, all of Garysburg.

Barmer charged Adams with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, two counts of discharging a weapon into occupied property, a count of possession of a firearm by a felon, and a count of going armed to the terror of the public.

Gilliam and Benu were charged with one count of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, two counts of discharging a weapon into occupied property, and a count of going armed to the terror of the public.

The men received $300,000 secured bonds and April 13 court dates.

“It was great to see other agencies come together and work together for a common goal,” Sheriff Jack Smith said. “I would like to thank all of our officers for their diligent work and I would like to thank all of the outside agencies for their support and assistance with this case. All of the hard work and assistance is greatly appreciated.”
