In addition to National Night Out, which is set August 1 at The Centre on the campus of Halifax Community College, the Roanoke Rapids Police Department has two more summer events set — a police camp which is already booked and a Fun Day on August 19 at Chaloner Recreation Center.

Interim police Chief Gorton Williams said the department is currently working on finalizing the Fun Day which will include food, basketball games and even haircuts, a bounce house and bike rodeo.

The police camp, which will be held at T.J. Davis Recreation Center, will be held from July 10 through 14 from 9 a.m. to noon. “It’s an opportunity for us to educate children on ways to prevent bullying, prevent drug abuse and gang prevention,” Williams said.

The 30 children slated to attend the camp are between the ages of 7 to 12 and students from Roanoke Rapids High School Early College will be assisting each day.

The events are as follows:

First day

Law enforcement day with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol and Roanoke Rapids Police Department. Detectives will demonstrate fingerprinting techniques.

Second day

Fire department day with the Roanoke Rapids Fire Department bringing its fire safety house and demonstrating CPR.

Third day

Spartan day with Spartan Elite, a day dedicated to healthy options.

Fourth day

Reptile day as well as an appearance by Wally the Wacky Waiter

Fifth day

Movie day.
