The Roanoke Rapids Police Department is bringing National Night Out back on August 1 with an event planned from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at The Centre on the campus of Halifax Community College.

Interim police Chief Gorton Williams said the event is being held in conjunction with the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office and Weldon Police Department.

With the theme of a community of neighbors coming together, Williams said the event, “Gives first responders an opportunity to get with the community and take a stand against crime. It helps us to fight back on the war against crime and drugs.”

Williams said the police department welcomes feedback during the event and with the other agencies joining in he believes “that builds the core of us working together. We can’t do this on our own. We need the help from the other agencies.”

Tina May, who is helping in organizing the event on what nationally will be the 40th anniversary of National Night Out, said organizers are still working on booking musical entertainment.

She said food trucks will be at the college along with a bounce house. Several local agencies beyond law enforcement will be distributing pamphlets, information, and other items and  the North Carolina State Highway Patrol and the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission will be on hand.

Nationwide the event, which is held the first Tuesday in August, will involve more than 16,700 communities from all 50 states, the country’s territories and military bases around the globe.

The event is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime efforts, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships as well as sending a message to criminals that their neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

“This is a night for America to stand together to promote awareness, safety, and neighborhood unity,” said National Project Coordinator Matt Perkin. “National Night Out showcases the vital importance of police-community partnerships and citizen involvement in our fight to build a safer nation.”
