The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office believes trafficking amounts of methamphetamine as well as other contraband were going to be dropped off early this morning at Roanoke River Correctional Institution in Tillery before a prison employee reported a suspicious vehicle and a person carrying a bag running on the property, according to Captain Scott Hall.
The shipment of 434 grams of meth, seven smartphones, 1,415 grams of tobacco and 60 suboxone strips were never dropped off at the prison and Deputy J. Snider stopped a vehicle with two adults and a 7-year-old child inside after correctional officials called back and reported that the vehicle left and was heading toward Halifax.
Hall said Snider stopped the vehicle on Highway 561 near Grapevine Road after receiving the call around 2 a.m.

The occupants of the vehicle were identified as Herman Evans, 38, of Durham, and Linda Bellamy, 32, of Hillsborough.
Further investigation led to the discovery of the contraband in a bag.
Hall said it was unclear who the recipients of the contraband were going to be.
Evans and Bellamy were each charged with trafficking methamphetamine, trafficking in methamphetamine by possession, possession of methamphetamine, maintain a vehicle for controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance on jail/prison premises, possession of schedule III, and child abuse.
Evans also had outstanding warrants for his arrest. He received a total bond of $225,000 secured — $125,000 for the drug charges and a $100,000 for a hold out of Durham County.
Bellamy received a $75,0000 secured bond.
As of this report both were still being held in the Halifax County Detention Center and await August 24 district court dates.
Social services assisted in placing the child in the custody of family.
