A man who was charged in a 2021 shooting death in Roanoke Rapids cut his ankle monitoring bracelet off Friday evening is on the lam and is wanted by the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office.

Captain Scott Hall said this morning investigators continue to follow up on leads in the case of Shelvy Travon Edwards, 27, of Roanoke Rapids. Edwards is scheduled for an October 9 superior court date in Halifax County where he faces charges of murder, felony conspiracy, robbery with a dangerous weapon and assault.

The charges are tied to the May 13, 2021 shooting death of Frederick Lee, who was shot inside his residence in the 300 block of Monroe Street.

Edwards had been released from jail and was placed on electronic monitoring but cut his device around 11 p.m. Friday.

Since then Hall said deputies have worked throughout the night and into the morning Saturday to locate Edwards, who was last seen in the downtown area of Roanoke Rapids.

The Roanoke Rapids Police Department at the time said officers and EMS responding to the 300 block of Monroe Street discovered Lee, 30, inside the residence. It appeared he had been shot in the upper body and did not survive.

Police responded to a shooting call at the residence shortly before 11:30 the evening of the crime.

Anyone with information on Edwards’ whereabouts is encouraged to call 911, their local law enforcement agency or Halifax County Crimestoppers at 252-583-4444.
