The Weldon Police Department reported the following, according to Chief Christopher Davis:

On Monday shortly before 8:30 p.m. Officer A. Green conducted a traffic stop off Highway 158 near Garris Street for the driver of a vehicle failing to dim their headlights. 

During the traffic stop, Green noticed a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle and identified the driver  as Chantel Avamtaye Solonge Alston, 19, of Garysburg.

Green located two plastic bags containing marijuana and a digital scale on the passenger side which the passenger, Azari Yamil Settles, 21, of Roanoke Rapids, claimed ownership.

Settles was charged with felony possession of marijuana, felony possession with intent to sell and deliver, and manufacturing marijuana. She received a $10,000 secured bond and Thursday district court date.

Alston was cited for failing to dim headlights and no operator's license.

Davis assisted.

Convicted felon with weapon

On Friday around 11:30 p.m. Green stopped a vehicle in the area of Highway 158 and W.C. Rivers Road for an expired registration. 

Green could smell a strong odor of marijuana and identified the driver as Jarell King, 30, of Enfield.

Green located a handgun under the driver's seat and learned after further investigation King was a convicted felon.

King was charged with possession of a firearm by a felon and carrying a concealed weapon. 

King received a secured bond of $7,500 and a May 23 district court date.

He was issued a citation for driving while license revoked.

The passenger of the vehicle, Mary Jonnell Pittman of Whitakers, the owner of the vehicle, was issued a citation for expired registration, aid and abetting driving while license suspended and an open container violation for an open bottle of beer found on the passenger side of the vehicle. 

Liquor larceny update

On Thursday an agent with North Carolina Alcohol Law Enforcement arrested Elijah Earl Sharpe, 19, of Tarboro after an investigation of a liquor larceny from the ABC Store on West Third Street on April 4.

During the investigation Davis identified Sharpe as one of the suspects involved and obtained a warrant for misdemeanor larceny and possession of spirituous liquor under the age of 21.  

Sharpe received a written promise to appear in court on May 8. 

More charges are pending.

A half-gallon of Tequila was stolen from the store.

Concealed weapon

On April 14 around 9 p.m. Officer D. Thomas heard several gunshots in the area of Second Street and Washington Avenue. 

The officer encountered Nasir Mack Lynch, 21, in the area.

As Lynch lifted his hooded sweatshirt at the officer’s request Thomas noticed a handgun in Lynch’s right front pocket. 

Thomas placed Lynch under arrest and during a search located a small amount of marijuana. Lynch, of Weldon, was charged with carrying a concealled weapon and possession of marijuana up to a half-ounce.

He was initially jailed without the opportunity for bond but is no longer in custody, according to detention records.

He has a June 12 district court date for Thomas’s charges and a May 23 district court date for cocaine and marijuana charges, no operator’s license, a previous carrying a concealed weapon count and resisting an officer.
