The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office reported the following, according to Major Anzell M. Harris:

A man wanted by the New Jersey State Police for failing to register as a sex offender faces two counts of trafficking fentanyl and heroin following a traffic stop Thursday.

The traffic stop was made in the Highway 301 area around 1:30 p.m. by special response team members and the Halifax Regional Drug and Gang Task Force.

The target of the investigation was Amado Gonzalez-Abreu, who is listed as wanted in the New Jersey sex offender registry under the name Edward Gonzalez and also uses the aliases Amado Gonzalez, Edward A. Gonzalez, and Jose M. Melendez.

He has been living in the Halifax area for approximately two months.

He was located inside a vehicle which after a positive canine search by Sergeant B.J. Murphy and Raven located approximately 6 grams of powdered cocaine and 37 grams of heroin.

A task force agent applied for a search warrant for the 41-year-old man’s residence in the 5000 block of Highway 301.

During that search 74 grams of powdered cocaine, approximately 456 grams of suspected heroin/fentanyl, a Taurus G2C 9mm handgun, and various narcotics packaging material were seized.

Gonzalez-Abreu was convicted of aggravated criminal sexual contact in June of 2006, according to the registry. The charge stems from him assaulting an intoxicated 17-year-old female acquaintance.

Harris said agents will collaborate with federal and state law enforcement and attempt to bring about new charges relating to his unregistered sex offender status in Halifax County.

Gonzalez-Abreu was charged with two counts of trafficking heroin/fentanyl, trafficking cocaine, three counts of possession with intent to manufacture, sell, deliver a schedule II controlled substance, three counts felony possession of cocaine, possession of drug paraphernalia and felony maintaining a dwelling for a controlled substance.

Gonzalez-Abreu received a $250,000 secured bond and was scheduled for a district court appearance today.

Street value of the drug seized during this investigation is approximately $90,000.
