Three new Halifax County commissioners will be sworn in next month after running unopposed in Tuesday’s election.

One of the new commissioners, Jimmie Silver, defeated Ophelia Gould-Faison in the primary and faced no opposition in the general election to earn the seat held by longtime board member Carolyn Johnson, who announced she would not seek another term..

Two other commissioners, Linda Brewer and John Smith, also announced they would not be seeking re-election.

Thomas Barrett will fill Brewer’s seat and Gary Redding will fill Smith’s seat.

“Congratulations to commissioners-elect Thomas Barrett, Jimmie Silver, and Gary Redding,” board Chair Vernon Bryant said today. “Job well done and I as well as commissioners Chenoa Davis and Sammy Webb look forward to working with each of them.”

He also thanked Brewer, Johnson, and Smith for their service. Unless there is a called meeting, the three outgoing commissioners served their last meeting on Monday. “We do thank the outgoing commissioners for all their hard work and dedicated service to Halifax County over the years,” Bryant said. “We wish each of them the absolute best in any future endeavors.”  

The outgoing commissioners will be honored with a floating reception on November 14 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Halifax County Agricultural Auditorium on Ferrell Lane in Halifax.

Besides the Weldon City Schools Board of Education race, the only other contested race in the county was the soil and water conservation district in which challenger Ken Morris defeated incumbent Matthew Whitehead. Morris garnered 59.01 percent of the votes in that race.

Christie Avens, who faced no opposition, was re-elected as register of deeds.

State races

Rodney Pierce, who defeated incumbent Michael Wray in the March primary, faced no opposition in the general election for the House 27 race.

In the North Carolina Senate District 2 race, Republican incumbent Norman Sanderson defeated challenger Tare Davis.

Republican incumbent Bobby Hanig defeated challenger Susan Harman-Scott in the North Carolina District 1 Senate race.

Federal

Incumbent Congressional District 1 incumbent Don Davis defeated Republican challenger Laurie Buckthout by a 49.46 to a 47.90 percent margin.

Uncontested judicial races

District 7 seat 1 Judge W. Rob Lewis won.

District 7 seat 2 Judge Teresa Raquel Robinson Freeman won.

District 7 seat 3 Judge-elect Takiya Lewis Blalock won.

District 7 seat 4 Judge-elect Jamal Summey won.

Canvass

The canvass of ballots will be held on November 15 at 11 a.m. in the board of commissioners meeting room at the Historic Courthouse in Halifax.

Voter turnout for the election in the county was 66.16 percent. The turnout for the 2020 general election was 68.12 percent.
