The Roanoke Rapids Police Department reported the following, according to interim Chief Bobby Martin:

On Wednesday shortly before 9:30 p.m. Officer B. Council was traveling on West Tenth Street when he noticed a vehicle without headlights on.

Officer Council followed the vehicle for several blocks to see if the driver would turn on the headlights due to the dark and rainy conditions.

Council conducted a traffic stop in the area of Green and West Tenth streets. The odor of alcohol was detected.

Council requested backup and Officer M. Hunsucker arrived and assisted with several tests indicating the person was too impaired to operate a motor vehicle.

The driver was identified as William Tanner, 64, from the Roanoke Rapids area.

Tanner was placed under arrest for suspicion of DWI.

He was carried before a magistrate and charged with DWI.

He received a May 10 court date and was released to the custody of a responsible party.

This morning shortly after 5:30, Council responded to the post office about a person trespassing on the property.

Council discovered a person identified as Kashelia Smith, 47, of Roanoke Rapids, sleeping on a counter inside.

Council learned Smith had been told not to come back due to sleeping in the building.

Smith was placed under arrest for trespassing and carried to the police department.

While at the police department she would not cooperate with officers and was eventually charged with resist, delay and obstruct.

She was charged with second-degree trespassing and resist, delay and obstruct.

She received an April 26 court date. Bond was not immediately available.
