Mike Stainback is listed in critical condition after he was struck by a motorist Wednesday afternoon, according to the Roanoke Rapids Police Department.

Stainback, known locally by his nickname ZZ, was airlifted to Vidant in Greenville, interim Chief Bobby Martin said in a statement.

The latest condition report was as of midnight, Martin said.

The collision occurred shortly after 1:15 p.m. in the area of Roanoke Avenue and Ninth Street.

The police department responded to a report of motor vehicle driver colliding with a person on a bicycle.

Officer C. Hagbourne responded and learned Stainback was trying to cross Roanoke Avenue on his bicycle when he was struck by a driver heading south on the avenue.

Stainback crossed in front of the driver, Martin said.

The driver, whose name was not released in the statement, was not charged in the collision due to investigation showing he was not at fault.

The driver was cited for no insurance and an inspection violation.

Martin, who could not be immediately reached for further comment this morning, said in the statement, “Our prayers and thoughts go out to him in hopes he will recover from this accident. Mike is very well known in our community and often stopped in and visited with us bringing his contagious smile and sense of humor. Mike is a pillar of our community and loved by everyone.”
