Walter Lee Askew, 76, of Darlington Community, NC passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 13, 2021 at his home surrounded by his family.
He was born in Tunis in Hertford County, NC on February 6, 1945 to the late Paul Franklin Askew and Martha Thompson Askew.
He was also preceded in death by his daughter Tammy Lee Askew Mitchell; his brothers Charles, William, Danny, and Paul Askew; brother-in-law, Z.P. Rowland, and nephew Robert Rowland.
Walter was an avid fisherman, he loved spending time on the banks of the Roanoke River at The Halifax Fishing Club where he was an active member.
He was a jack of all trades whether it be mechanics, carpentry, and gardening. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
Walter is survived by his wife of 56 years, Shirley Harlow Askew of Darlington, NC; his daughters Sharon Askew Barlow and husband Edward of Roanoke Rapids, NC and Linda Askew Warren and Kip of Darlington, NC; his son Michael Mitchell and wife Stephanie of Roanoke Rapids, NC; adopted son, Mark Warren of Darlington, NC; his grandchildren, Christopher Nowell, Ashley Bennett and husband Matthew, Nathan Barlow, Justin Barlow and wife Lauren, Michael Mitchell Jr. all of Roanoke Rapids, Zackery Warren of Darlington, Melanie Craft of Rocky Mount, NC, Makenzie Hamilton of Roanoke Rapids, NC; his great grandchildren, Landen Nowell, Braxton & Matilyn Bennett, Hayden & Waylon Barlow, Tanner & Jacob Barlow, Bryceson Craft; sisters Bettie Askew-Rowland of Darlington, NC and Margaret Askew Purkett of New Jersey; brother, James Askew and wife Viola of Ahoskie, NC; sisters-in-law, Fran Rowland of Darlington, NC and Peggy Askew of Roanoke Rapids, NC; Nieces and Nephews, Shirley Finch, Christi Yarbough, Sheryl Mayle, Joe Rowland, Michael Rowland, Doug Askew, Curvey “CJ” Purkett, Paul Purkett, Keith Askew and his canine, Bo.
The family would like to thank Liberty Home Care & Hospice for the care that they gave Walter and the family, and a special thank you to his caregiver, Sherrie Beal.
Funeral services will be held, Friday, April 16, 2021 at 11:00 am on the banks of the Roanoke River at The Halifax Fishing Club, 380 Fishing Club Road Halifax, NC, with Pastor Justin Carp officiating. The family will receive friends on Thursday, April 15, 2021 at Askew Funeral & Cremation Services from 6:30 to 8:00 pm and other times at the home.
Interment will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids, NC.
