Major Scott Hall of the Halifax County Sheriff's Office said in a statement investigation by Deputy J. Langley led to the arrests of Robert Sean Davis, 22, and Lexi Ann McLeod, 20.

The ladder was recovered at a pawn shop in Roanoke Rapids.

Langley charged Davis with larceny, possession of stolen property, obtaining property by false pretense and felony conspiracy.

McLeod was charged with felony conspiracy.

The pair have February 24 court dates.

Scam alert

Meanwhile, Chief Deputy Bruce Temple reports area residents can expect an influx of telephone scams during the next two months.

With tax season at hand, scammers are using cell phones that are not traced or utilizing computer or cell phone applications to mask the actual number of the source phone in order to make calls identifying them as the Internal Revenue Service.

A common area code used today has been 206, which is from the state of Washington. “We have had recent complaints from area codes in Florida as well. Although we anticipate the influx and recently sent out a fraud alert, the increased complaints in the last few days has us on alert and keeping the public informed.”

The IRS makes no attempt to recover tax money by phone, Temple said. “Anytime that you get a suspicious phone call, please use Google to search the phone number. Chances are, the number will be identified online as a number utilized to commit fraud. We recommend blocking numbers that are harassing and to contact your appropriate law enforcement agency if a persistent caller continues.”
