Lieutenant Chris Horvath said it took firefighters about 15 minutes to contain the fire.
An occupant of the house got out safely but was carried to the hospital for evaluation, the lieutenant said.
As of this report firefighters were still investigating to determine the cause of the fire and where in the house it started.
Both Roanoke Rapids fire stations responded along with Halifax County EMS and the Roanoke Valley Rescue Squad.
