"Our annual training conference allows North Carolina's sheriffs to discuss their experiences and learn from each other, as well as bring ourselves up-to- date on important law enforcement developments,” he said. “North Carolina sheriffs have a complex role as Constitutional officers leading law enforcement within their respective counties. Our duties often require that we be available to personnel and to the public continuously. My staff and I will use this conference training to further serve and protect Halifax County's citizens."
Tripp said those in his capacity across the state “are facing tremendous challenges in carrying out their responsibilities for law enforcement and the safety of our citizens.”
Those challenges include maintenance and operation of local jails as well as recruiting, training and maintaining talented personnel.
They must also work with domestic situations, child abuse cases, serving civil papers and tracking sex offenders in the state as well as issuing weapons permits, providing court security, and other duties
According to a statement, sheriffs discussed issues of interest to their office, including updates on new changes to the law and procedures, as well as an update on the state budget and other actions by the 2016 General Assembly. In addition, a training class was offered on issues associated with body-worn and dashboard cameras.
General H. Hugh Shelton, United States Army Retired, provided training to sheriffs about leadership during times of crisis. His military career included being the senior officer of the United States military and principal military advisor to the President of the United States, the Secretary of Defense and the National Security Council. He served as the fourteenth Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1997 until his retirement in 2001. He had previously served as Commander-in-Chief of U.S. Special Operations Command.
