Willie Gilchrist, the former superintendent of Halifax County schools, has announced he is stepping down as chancellor of Elizabeth State University and will formally retire June 30, multiple media organizations are reporting.

His resignation comes as the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation continues a probe into obstruction of justice and witness intimidation allegations that center on how campus police handled a complaint of assault and sexual battery on the campus.

News organizations reported Gilchrist’s resignation follows the resignation last week of university police Chief Sam Beamon.

Gilchrist, who has been at ECSU since 2007, said his decision is in the best interest of the university, the state system and his family. UNC President Tom Ross will soon name an interim chancellor, according to a news release.

The Associated Press reported his resignation comes in the wake of reports that the campus police department did not investigate about 125 criminal complaints going back to 2007, including 18 sexual assaults.
