A Suffolk, Virginia, man has been charged with a sex offense involving an underaged girl, according to the Northampton County Sheriff's Office.

Raymond Allen Goodwin, 23, was jailed on $100,000 bond after surrendering to the sheriff's office Sunday, Captain Chuck Hasty said.

He was charged with statutory rape-sex offense of a person who is 13, 14 or 15 by a person at least six years older than the victim.

On June 7, the sheriff's office responded to the Severn area on a reported assault call.

Deputy Justine Wilkins, however, learned the call was about a sexual assault involving a juvenile.

Initial investigation showed that while the juvenile's mother was asleep, the child left the house. While looking unsuccessfully for the child, the mother returned home and found the child walking back to the residence.

The child reportedly told her mother she was with Goodwin, with whom she is acquainted.

Detective Bo Deloatch continued the investigation and gained information that led to the charge against Goodwin, who is scheduled for a first court appearance Thursday.

Investigation into the matter continues, Hasty said.

“Keeping our children safe is a priority for the Northampton County Sheriff’s Office,” Sheriff Jack Smith said in a statement. “Parents need to keep a constant check on our children. I would like to commend Deputy Wilkins and Lieutenant Deloatch on their work in this case.”
