An approximately 20-foot section of balcony at the Weldon Econo Lodge collapsed this morning.

No one was injured and the occupants of the room that exits onto the structure left before the collapse, said Lieutenant Trey Evans of the Weldon Fire Department.

The collapse was reported around 8 this morning.

Firefighters evacuated the remaining occupants of the motel, somewhere between 90 to 100 guests.

Evans said firefighters did not know what caused the structure to collapse.

The town of Weldon's code enforcement officer has condemned the building and Dominion Power crews were at the scene to disconnect the power.

Right now, Evans said, “It's up to the owners to get an engineer to check the structural integrity of the building.”

Mitesh Patel, the owner of the motel, said he would be contacting an engineering firm to see if the building is safe for guests to stay in.

He had no idea what caused the collapse. “All of a sudden it fell down.”
