Roanoke Rapids police are conducting a murder investigation stemming from a shooting that occurred shortly after midnight at Fourth and Madison Streets.

Deputy Chief Andy Jackson declined to name the victim pending notification of next of kin.

The call initially came in as a wreck but officers learned the victim was fatally shot.

In a statement released by Chief Chuck Hasty, the call came in at approximately 12:15 a.m.

When Officer Matt Hunsucker arrived, he found the victim in the vehicle unresponsive and several other officers and EMS arrived to assist.

Hasty said as medical aid was being rendered the officers discovered the victim had a gunshot wound and was deceased.

Jackson declined to elaborate. “The police department is actively working on it. The Criminal Investigation Division has been working around the clock.”

Hasty, who also declined to elaborate, said anyone with information is encouraged Roanoke Rapids Police Department 252-533-2898 or Crimestoppers at 252-583-4444.
