Smith said he wanted to know how the rezoning of the land from B-4 Commercial-Entertainment Overlay District to I-2 heavy industrial might impact the potential sale of the Roanoke Rapids Theatre. He also wants further information on how the rezoning, should a client purchase the more than 80 acres, might affect traffic coming in and out of Wallace Fork Road, particularly around the traffic circle there. “I'd like the people who are trying to sell the theater to have a voice in this,” he said.
Following the meeting he said he didn't think the rezoning should have any impact on the potential sale of the venue, but explained, “I want to make sure something can't happen that we can't sell the theater.”
The decision to continue the matter came after the city planning board last month sent a recommendation to council for approval.
The January 19 meeting will be held at the Lloyd Andrews City Meeting Hall at 5:15 p.m.
City Manager Joseph Scherer said he has contacted S.L. Nusbaum, the company chosen to list the theater, for input on the rezoning but has not heard back.
Meanwhile, in a matter related to the venue, Scherer noted in his report to council the city has a meeting later this week with someone who has expressed some interest in buying the building.
He declined to elaborate following the meeting.
He also noted in his report Parks and Recreation Director John Simeon continues to arrange for rentals of the facility.
