People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals will provide straw bedding for dogs which have inadequate protection from an impending cold front expected to grip the area over the weekend.

The organization will be at Tractor Supply Thursday from noon to 3 p.m. with what it said in a statement is a massive stock of straw bedding which will be given away free.

Residents who are unable to travel to Tractor Supply may call PETA's Community Animal Project at 1-800-566-9768 to make delivery arrangements.

PETA has already posted billboards in and around the city featuring a shivering chained dog next to the words "Cold? Please, Take Your Dog Inside" to remind residents that dogs are miserable, suffer, and even die in cold weather.

"Every dog deserves to be part of a family, but the least that can be done is to take animals indoors during weather extremes," says PETA Senior Vice President Daphna Nachminovitch.

Meanwhile, she said of the straw giveaway, “PETA is offering a small—yet potentially lifesaving—measure of help during frigid winter days and nights."
