Roanoke Rapids City Council this evening pledged support to the Halifax County Economic Development Commission to entice CSX to locate its intermodal connector terminal within the county.

Council unanimously adopted a resolution similar to one Halifax County commissioners adopted at the beginning of the month, wording it near the end with the following statements: “ … the Roanoke Rapids City Council feels the Carolina Connector intermodal terminal project would have a significant positive impact on the economic situation in Roanoke Rapids,” and that it “supports the efforts of the Halifax County Economic Development Commission to begin the process of identifying potentially viable sites” for the project.

“The Roanoke Rapids City Council requests that the Halifax County Economic Development Commission involve local residents and property owners in identifying potentially viable sites that may be recommended to CSX for this project.”

In asking for the resolution to be adopted, City Manager Joseph Scherer said, “I'm sure this would be an economic boon for the area.”

After the meeting he said while there are no potentially viable sites within the city for the project, “We'll support all their efforts.”

He said he believes regardless where the project is located in the county, “It will benefit the residents in the city.”
