The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office has lodged a charge of attempted murder against an inmate who reportedly stabbed a correctional officer at Caledonia Thursday night.

The inmate, John D. Hampton, was earlier charged by the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office with assault with a deadly weapon on a government official inflicting serious injury.
Halifax County Sheriff Wes Tripp said this afternoon the additional charge was lodged due to the extent of the injuries sustained by the officer, Clarence Wade, who was stabbed several times in the upper torso.
It was not immediately clear whether Hampton remains at Caledonia. A spokesman with the state Department of Public Safety was attempting to clarify whether the inmate was moved to another facility.
The stabbing occurred at the prison located in Tillery around 6 p.m.
Tripp said earlier today a motive has not yet been established in the case where Hampton, an inmate serving time for first-degree kidnapping in Mitchell County, allegedly assaulted Wade with a homemade weapon.
Wade was once a sergeant with the sheriff’s office and has been employed with the state Department of Public Safety for six years.
Department of Public Safety spokesman Keith Acree said earlier today while Wade’s injuries were serious, they are not considered to be life-threatening. He said Wade was transported to Vidant in Greenville overnight.
No additional condition update was immediately available as of this report.
