After cancelling last year, the event comes back October 22 for a paddle event which takes canoeists and kayakers from the Weldon boat landing to the Halifax Fishing Club in Halifax, said Chris Wicker, who is helping organize the event.
The event is a partnership between the town of Weldon, the Halifax County Convention and Visitors Bureau and Roanoke River Partners.
Funds raised by the event will help promote and support activities associated with the river, Wicker said. “Weldon will use funds to promote more activities. We hope as it grows to see a river festival.”
Early online registration for the event is available by following this link. “We are excited to offer online registration and early bird registration specials this year,” he said.
Wicker sid timing of this year’s event should coincide with brighter fall colors and the chance to see wildlife including ducks, geese, eagles, osprey and heron. “Wild turkey and other birds may be seen along the way. Occasionally, otters, beavers, deer, and other unique wildlife can be seen.”
At the fishing club in Halifax, paddlers will be served Brunswick stew and cornbread as traditional bluegrass is played by The Hammers at the club’s renovated barn.
Registration includes a commemorative T-shirt,the Saturday lunch, and coffee and snacks before the paddle launches.
While online registration is encouraged, forms can be obtained at Weldon Town Hall, 109 Washington Avenue or the Halifax County Tourism office at 260 Premier Boulevard in Roanoke Rapids.
Other online registration sites include the town of Weldon and Visit Halifax.
