George Benjamin Norwood Jr.

George Benjamin Norwood, Jr., 64, of 1335 Jefferson Street, Roanoke Rapids, died Friday, December 3, 2010 at his home.

Mr. Norwood was a lifetime member of the Roanoke Valley Rescue Squad and served as its chaplain and also the chaplain of Better Breathers Club.  He was a great father and grandfather.  He was a member of Community Freewill Baptist Church.

Mr. Norwood was born August 26, 1946, to the late George B. Norwood, Sr. and Bessie Davis Carroll. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Jimmy Norwood.

He is survived by his son: David Perry and wife, Rose, and his daughter: Susan McLaughlin and husband, Thomas, of Roanoke Rapids; three brothers: Gene Norwood, Steve Burnette and wife, Macy, and Bobby Bowen and wife, Linda, of Roanoke Rapids; three sisters: Brenda Faye Harris, of Rocky Mount, Vicky Johnson and husband, Richard, of Gaston, and Kay Bowen of Littleton; his sisters-in-law: Kay Horne and husband David and Ruby Conner of Roanoke Rapids, and Jean Haskins of Halifax; his grandchildren: Joshua McLaughlin, Benjamin Perry, Patience McLaughlin, Sheida McLaughlin, Heaven McLaughlin,  of Roanoke Rapids, and T. J. McLaughlin of Hertford.

Funeral services will be held Monday, December 6, 2010, at 2:00 P.M. in the chapel of Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service conducted by Rev. Chuck Owens and Billy Meinsen, Minister.  Burial will follow in the Community Center Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, December 5, 2010, at the funeral home from 7:00 to 9:00 P.M.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Roanoke Valley Rescue Squad, 201 Washington Street, Roanoke Rapids, N. C. 27870.
