Vernon Bryant will remain chair of the Halifax County Board of Commissioners and Rives Manning will remain its vice chair.

Today’s meeting also saw Christie Avens sworn in as the county’s new register of deeds and the board honoring retiring register Judy Evans-Barbee.
Linda Brewer was sworn in as commissioner, the second time she took the oath, the first as replacement for the late Rachel Hux and today for collecting the ballots cast for Hux in the November election.

Commissioners Carolyn Johnson and Marcelle Smith, who ran unopposed were sworn in.
“Thank for the vote of confidence in me,” said Bryant after his peers elected him chair. “I take this honor seriously. This is not about me, it’s about serving the citizens of Halifax County.”
While Bryant said he would eventually like to see someone else hold the position of chair, he said, “I enjoy serving as a Halifax County commissioner.”
Manning simply thanked his fellow board members for electing him vice chair while Johnson said, “I’m thankful for the voters’ confidence in me.”
Smith, the youngest member of the board, said, “It’s a privilege and I’m honored to serve all the citizens of Halifax County.”
Brewer said she was honored to be on the board and to work “on establishing common goals.”
Meanwhile, Avens, who ran unopposed and had the backing of Evans-Barbee, thanked her husband, James, for his support. “He stood with me the whole time. Thank you and I love you.”
In honoring Evans-Barbee with a resolution, Bryant told her, “Thank you for a job well done.”
The retiring register, who received a standing ovation, told the board, “I’m thankful to have served the county all these years. It’s been a good career. I’m ready to go home. I’m turning it over to good hands.”
