Halifax County commissioners today paid respects to the family and honored the memory of the late Rachel Hux.

Not only was the family honored by commissioners, but by Halifax Community College, the county economic development commission and Halifax Horizons.
“We served on many boards together,” said Frank Avent, chair of the economic development commission, to Hux’s daughter, Robin Isles. “She was a person you could always count on. What you saw was what you got with Rachel Hux.”
Jay Carlisle, spoke not only as chair of horizons, but as chair of the Roanoke Rapids Graded School District Board of Education. “It was an honor and privilege to serve with Rachel on Halifax Horizons.”
As chair of the board of education, Carlisle said, “I thank Rachel for her dedication and service to the district and for the love of all the school districts.”
Commissioner Patrick Qualls called Hux, who died on October 27, a neighbor and good friend. “She was a great commissioner and she was wonderful to bounce ideas off of.”
Commissioner Carolyn Johnson and Hux came on as board members at the same time. “I admired her for her beliefs. I’m going to miss her greatly. She was a good friend, a great commissioner. We’re going to go on and continue to be as productive as we can without her.”
Commissioner Rives Manning, who presented Isles a framed copy of the resolution in Hux’s honor, called his colleague a fine lady who raised a fine family. “I was pleased to serve with her. She was a calming influence on some of our wild ideas. It was a pleasure serving with Rachel. She left big shoes to fill.”

Commissioners today also recognized the retirements of Sergeant Stanly Rodwell — first photo — and Sergeant Steve Byrum — second photo — from the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office. The remaining photos are of presentations to Isles in honor of her mother.

Board member Marcelle Smith sat beside Hux, he and her separated from the other commissioners by the clerk and county manager. “We would caucus, a lot of sidebar conversations. We were doing our business down here while y’all were talking. Rachel kept me under control when I was ready to go home. She will truly be missed, but I know she is still with us.”
Linda Brewer was the overwhelming choice of the county’s Democratic Party to be Hux’s successor. “Rachel and I go way back,” Brewer said. “We raised children and grandchildren together. I don’t think there was ever a time she wasn’t smiling. I am honored to be seated in her seat. She loved the county, loved all the schools. I was glad she got to see Manning project.”
County Manager Tony Brown said he had to remind Hux she was his boss. “She had a strong presence. She had opinions. She was very thoughtful. She was on top of her game. She was a very engaged commissioner.”
Board Chair Vernon Bryant called Hux a team player who loved all three school districts. Even when she beat defeated him in a runoff election, Bryant said, “We were friends from day one. She had my back. Rachel was a true friend.”
For Isles, the presentations were heartfelt and she told the board, “I’d like to thank you for being a part of her life.”
