Robert Smoot is hopeful his February 11 A Tribute to the Music of Motown concert will be the first of several he brings to the Roanoke Rapids Theatre throughout the year.

Scheduled for 8 p.m., the concert will bring to life the songs of the early years of Motown — The Temptations, The Four Tops, Diana Ross and the Supremes, Smokey Robinson, Junior Walker and the Allstars, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin, and Gladys Knight and the Pips.
This will be Brencore Entertainment’s second event at the theater and the third in Halifax County after bringing a show to The Centre on the campus of Halifax Community College last year.
“It’s just an amazing venue,” Smoot said of the theatre, located off Interstate 95. “We have people coming from Raleigh.”

To purchase tickets:

Advanced reserved seating tickets online at the theater website

Day of event general admission tickets will be available at the theater box office, which will be open at 10 a.m. the day of the show

VIP box seats are available for groups by contacting the box office at 252-538-3824

He has worked out a special deal with the Hampton Inn for those who want to the stay the night after the performance. “I love to come here. It takes everyone working together. We can have people coming here to see a beautiful venue. It should be open every Friday and Saturday night.”
Smoot’s sister, Debbie Davis, says she calls the venue the Kennedy Center of North Carolina. “It’s just gorgeous.”
Smoot has become a successful event promoter in the Washington, D.C., and Fredericksburg, Virginia, areas, and has also forged a good relationship with city officials in Roanoke Rapids. “I’ve been blessed,” he said. “The city has been very good to me. I almost feel like I’m home.”
The upcoming show, he is said, is a way for him to “give the area the entertainment it deserves.”
The Motown tribute, Davis said, will be a professional production, with many of the artists having their own national careers. A 14-piece band will perform as the concert carries the audience through the early 60s to the Jackson 5.
“It’s a production that’s as close to Motown as you can get,” Smoot said. “It’s the real deal.”
Davis said the act has become so precise a Motown Christmas show has been produced that she and Smoot, through Brencore Entertainment would like to bring to the theater.
With the show three days before Valentine’s Day, Davis said the concert is a great lead-in. “It’s an excellent concert to bring friends, girlfriends, wives as a Valentine’s gift.”
Smoot and Davis have been promoting the show within a 100-mile radius of Roanoke Rapids and have discussed bringing a blues festival as well as tributes to artists such as Luther Vandross, Whitney Houston and Franklin.
For now the focus is on the Motown Tribute. “If you love Motown, you need to be here,” Smoot said. “You will enjoy the whole production. It’s got a little bit of everything. We’ll have you dancing in your seats.”
Roanoke Rapids Parks and Recreation Director John Simeon is one of the people Smoot notes as having forged a successful relationship with. “I’m looking forward to working with Brencore and pleased to have them back in Roanoke Valley,” Simeon said.
