City County Drug Task Force Agent D.J. Hundley arrested Marquise Whitmore on outstanding warrants stemming from an indictment last month as well new charges for reportedly throwing 19 bindles of heroin from his vehicle following a brief chase in the Highway 903-Three Bridges Road area.
Whitmore’s name is listed on the court calendar more than 20 times to face a variety of charges, including the December 20, 2014 death of Leslie Fishel at the intersection of Tenth Street and Becker Drive.
He was also charged last summer on drug counts.
His arrest this evening occurred around 5 p.m. after Hundley spotted the 28-year-old Whitmore and knew he had an outstanding order for arrest.
Task force Captain A.M. Harris said in a statement Hundley activated blue lights and siren in an attempt to stop Whitmore, who initially refused to stop. He stopped on Roberts Road.
Harris said this evening it was not clear why Whitmore, who has been a target in past drug investigations, was in the area.
Hundley charged Whitmore with possession with the intent to sell/deliver heroin, possession of heroin, fail to heed light or siren, resisting a public officer and maintaining a dwelling for a controlled substance.
He was also served with a true bill indictment issued in February for possession with the intent to sell/deliver heroin, sell heroin and deliver heroin.
The indictment was based on an investigation conducted by task force agents, the Northampton County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Division and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigations Diversion and Environmental Crimes Unit.
Harris said in the statement Whitmore is one of several arrests pending for the sale of heroin in Halifax County.
While Whitmore, according to state court records, is scheduled to appear in court next week to answer to a litany of charges, including the counts reflecting Fishel’s death, those proceedings will most likely be continued, sources have said.
Whitmore received a $90,000 bond was and confined to the Halifax County Detention Center with an April 17 court date.
Agent J.R. Matthews and Halifax County Sheriff’s Office Corporal D. Newsome and his dog, Duri, assisted in the traffic stop.
