Captain A.M. Harris of the City County Drug Task Force reported on Friday around noon Halifax County Sheriff’s Office Gang Task Force Agent Corey Dixon received information a package containing marijuana was en route to a residence in Roanoke Rapids.

Harris this afternoon would only say information was received and he declined to disclose shipping information.

The package was intercepted and a search warrant was applied for and granted.

During the search of the package agents found approximately 2 pounds of marijuana.

Agents, Dixon and deputies prepared a controlled delivery to a residence in the 3000 block of Highway 903 and had a search warrant for the home as well.

A man, later identified as Grover Lewis Edwards Jr., accepted the package. He ran out the back door with the package when the search warrant was executed.

Agents and deputies captured Edwards inside the wood line behind the residence.

During the search of the residence, with the assistance of sheriff’s office Corporal Dustin Newsom and his dog, Duri, an additional 250.4 grams of marijuana, an AR-15 rifle, currency and several items of marijuana paraphernalia were seized.

Harris arrested and charged Edwards, 36, with felony possession of marijuana, possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana, possession of marijuana paraphernalia, resisting a public officer and possession of firearm by felon.  

He has an October 25 court date.

The estimated street value of what Harris described as high-grade marijuana seized is approximately $12,000.

Roanoke Rapids Police Department

Chief Chuck Hasty reported on Wednesday at approximately 11:30 p.m., Officer E. Johnson was on routine patrol when he noticed a vehicle parked at the Chaloner Recreation Center on Dixie Street.  

Johnson noticed an odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. During a search marijuana was found.

Johnson cited Courtney Michelle Pennell, 19, of Roanoke Rapids, with possession of schedule VI and possession of drug paraphernalia.

She was released until her November 17 court date.  

Scotland Neck Police Department

Captain Tommy Parker reported on Thursday around 1:45 p.m. Corporal C. Little observed a moving violation at the intersection of Fifth and Main streets.

The driver, identified as Montrell Alston of Scotland Neck, failed to stop at a stop sign.

Upon stopping the vehicle in the parking lot of Food Lion, Little detected the strong odor of alcohol coming from Alston as they talked.

Little conducted several tests to determine if Alston was too impaired to drive.

Alston was cooperative during the initial contact. After conducting the tests, Little arrested Alston for DWI.

Alston then reportedly attacked Little and tried to flee the arrest on foot.

During the struggle, Little requested assistance.

Little handcuffed Alston and Parker arrived at the scene to assist.

Halifax County deputies arrived shortly after.

Halifax EMS arrived to treat Little. Alston received minor injuries and refused treatment.

Little received injuries to his face, legs and right hand.

Little was treated at Halifax Regional in Roanoke Rapids and is expected to return to work soon.

Alston was charged with failing to stop at stop sign, DWI, assault inflicting serious injury to law enforcement officer, resisting a law enforcement officer and damage to property.

His court date is October 4 and a magistrate issued a $20,000 secured bond.
