Roy Lee Powell

Roy Lee Powell, 86, of Roanoke Rapids passed away Tuesday, December 12, 2017 at Wake Medical center in Raleigh.

Roy was born April 18, 1931 in Roanoke Rapids, NC, the son of the late Milton Jeff Powell and Courtney “Coatie” Baird Powell. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, JW, Melvin and Freddie Powell.

He was a 1949 graduate of Gaston High School. He was a US Navy veteran having entered service in 1949 for seven years and served aboard the USS St. Paul (CA-73). He later met his future wife Ida “Shug” Powell, whom he married on December 31, 1954. On the day he was discharged from the Navy, their son, Ronnie was born. He retired after 30 years of employment at Champion. Roy was a member of Victory Baptist Church, and formerly long-time member of Lake View Park Baptist Church. He and his wife enjoyed their retirement, particularly traveling with their airstream trailer to Florida for the winter and also enjoying their summers at Highland Haven Airstream Park in Virginia.

Roy is survived by his loving wife, Ida “Shug” Powell; his son, Ronnie and his wife, Cindy; two grandchildren, Curtis Powell and Jennifer Green and her husband, Michael; two great-grandchildren, Gracyn and Corey Green; his sisters, Evelyn Drake, Carolyn Barnes and her husband, Wayne and Lynn Powell and her husband, William; his brothers, Winfred Powell and his wife, Judy and Ray Powell and his wife, Janet; his sisters-in-law, Pearl Powell and Lou Powell; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to give special thanks to his caregivers, Georgia Hubbard and Jessica Purnell.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 P.M. Saturday, December 16, 2017 at Victory Baptist Church with Rev. Jeremy Kobernat officiating. Interment will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 – 9:00 P.M. Friday, December 15, 2017 at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Victory Baptist Church Missions, 2360 Bolling Road, Roanoke Rapids, NC 27870.
