County crime roundup: Knife assault; heroin in lottery ticket

The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office reported an arrest in a January 9 assault and the City County Drug Task Force reported heroin was found wrapped in a lottery ticket following a Monday night traffic stop.

Chief Deputy Scott Hall reported on January 9 around 2 p.m., deputies responded to an address on Highway 903 outside Roanoke Rapids regarding an assault with a knife.

During the investigation, Sergeant B. Thompson and Deputy C. Carman learned two family members were in an argument and Raven Natasha Morris, 33, reportedly retrieved a small knife and attacked the other party.

During the assault, the victim received injuries to their face near the orbital area, cheek and nose as well as their back.

Morris fled the scene and was later arrested after she surrendered to deputies on January 12 around 9:30 p.m.

Morris was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and at the time received a $5,000 bond. She has a February 7 court date.

The report does not clarify their family relationship or the nature of the argument.

The victim in this case was treated and released from Halifax Regional Medical Center.

Captain A.M. Harris reported on Monday shortly after 9 p.m. Agent D.J. Epperson stopped a vehicle for a violation at a convenience store in the area of Highway 158 and Roanoke Avenue.

Epperson could reportedly smell the strong odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle.  

The driver was identified as Desmond King, 23, of Reese’s Store Road, Halifax.

He reportedly threw a lottery ticket to the ground while talking with the agent.

Agents D.W. McKeel and C.A. Parker arrived to assist.  

Agents retrieved the lottery ticket and unfolded it, finding it contained heroin.  During the search three dosage units of heroin were seized.

Epperson arrested and charged King for possession with intent to manufacture/sell/deliver heroin, possession of heroin, maintaining a vehicle/dwelling for a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while license revoked and littering.  

King received a February 21 court date.
