On Thursday at approximately noon, Investigator G. Williams recognized Nazir Belton, who had warrants, walking on East Tenth Street.

The warrants stem from an investigation conducted by officers R. Cross and M. Worrell about a person who was robbed of their cell phone on February 7.

Officers charged Belton, 18, of Roanoke Rapids, with common law robbery, obtain property by false pretense and felony conspiracy.

In February, police charged Austin Ramirez, 16, with common law robbery of the phone as well as a juvenile.

In connection to the case, Cross and Worrell on Thursday charged Markus Chappell 19, of Roanoke Rapids.

This arrest came after officers learned Chappell received the stolen phone from Belton and sold it to a business.

Chappell was charged with obtaining property by false pretense and felony conspiracy.

He received a $2,000 bond and April 4 court date.

Belton received a $15,000 bond and April 4 court date.

On Thursday at approximately 3 p.m., Chief Chuck Hasty took Howard Lee Lynch 49, of Roanoke Rapids into custody for an assault which occurred Monday.

Hasty was patrolling in the area of Eighth and Franklin streets when a call was received Lynch was in the area.

The case stems from an assault report Monday around 3 p.m. in the 900 block of Henry Street.

Worrell and Cross arrived in the area and discovered the victim had been hit with a sling blade in his wrist area causing a laceration.

The victim was treated by EMS and released.

Through further investigation the officers learned Lynch was the alleged suspect and obtained warrants for assault with a deadly weapon.

He received a $1,000 bond and March 23 court date.

Martin said the assault occurred after Lynch and the victim got into a argument.
