A Roanoke Rapids man who was the target of a manhunt last week after he allegedly broke into an elderly victim’s home and was shot was served a warrant for burglary.

Roanoke Rapids police Chief Chuck Hasty said Wade Carter III was jailed on $100,000 bond and has a June 6 court date.

Carter was served the warrant around 2:15 Saturday afternoon.

Police identified Carter after receiving information Thursday a man was at the hospital with a possible gunshot wound.

The break-in occurred around 3:30 a.m. Thursday in the 500 block of Raleigh Street.

The 88-year-old homeowner, who was awakened by a noise during the break-in, retrieved a firearm and fired multiple shots, striking Carter at least once.

Carter, who wore all black except for white gloves, fled through a backdoor and police believe he made his getaway on a bicycle.
