Charlie Calvin Luper

Charlie Calvin Luper, 85, of Olde Towne Road, Roanoke Rapids, died Sunday, August 28, at Nash General Hospital in Rocky Mount.

Mr. Luper was very outgoing and never met a stranger. Everyone who met him loved him. He loved his wife of 48 years, Elizabeth, and took care of her until the end, and also loved his children and grandchildren and his neighbors everywhere he lived. He was a hard working man who could fix anything and was right there for anyone who needed help. He loved working in the food business and owned Eaton’s Ferry Grocery and Grill for several years and Luper’s Restaurant (home of the Charlie Burger) in Littleton and Roanoke Rapids. He was a member of Victory Baptist Church.

Mr. Luper was born June 3, 1926, to the late Andrew Jackson Luper and Mamie Williams Luper. He was also predeceased by his wives, Bettie Eason Luper and Elizabeth Luper; a son Gary Arrington; a brother, Clifton Luper; and a granddaughter, Andrea Jeanette Lamb.

Surviving Mr. Luper are his children: Tim Luper and wife, Sylvia; Betsy Nagy; Joan Lucas and husband, Paul, all of Rocky Mount; Cindy Sewel l and husband, Mike, of Roanoke Rapids; and Douglas Calvin Luper and wife, Mara, of Alexandria, VA; a daughter-in-law, Brenda Arrington, of Elm City; his brothers: Amos Luper of Augusta, GA; Elijah Luper and wife, Mary Jane, of Elm City; and George Luper and his wife, Jean, of Little Rock, Arkansas; a sister, Lucy Potter and husband, Ben, of Rocky Mount; 17 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Thursday, September 1, from 7 to 9 P.M. at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service, and other times at 1309 Johnston Street in Roanoke Rapids.

Funeral services will be held Friday, September 2, at 11 A.M. at Victory Baptist Church conducted by Pastor Doug Gross and Gary Moore.

Interment will follow at Rocky Mount Memorial Park at 2 P. M.
