Chief Deputy Scott Hall of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office reported the following:

On Tuesday around 8:30 p.m., Corporal Michael Bishop conducted a traffic stop on Mulberry near Third Street in Weldon for a motor vehicle violation.

Further investigation by Bishop, Lieutenant John Bozard and canine Fino led to a search of the vehicle.

The driver, identified as Kenny Epps, 36, of Roanoke Rapids, fled the scene on foot and was later apprehended a short distance from the vehicle stop.

Weldon Police Department officers N. Coles and Q. Godley responded to the area to assist.

A bag containing powdered cocaine was thrown during the foot pursuit and was later located and collected.

Bishop arrested and charged Epps with felony possession of cocaine, possession of an open container of alcohol, and resist, delay and obstruct.

He received a $2,500 bond and a July 18 court date.
