National Night Out is set for Tuesday in Weldon and Littleton.

HCC event

At The Centre on the campus of Halifax Community College, the Enfield, Roanoke Rapids and Weldon police departments will join with the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office for the 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. event.

This will be the first year Enfield has joined the event at HCC, Chief Tyree Davis said. “I’m looking forward to it. For the past several years (RRPD Chief) Chuck (Hasty) has invited to us to participate.”

The Enfield event experienced low turnout and one year it was cancelled due to weather. “The chief extended the invitation and I spoke with our town administrator and he approved us going to HCC.”

Davis will bring several officers to the event, patrol cars and have literature for children of different ages including Eddie the Eagle gun safety information, parental guides to gun safety, Enfield junior officer stickers and police department pencils. The department will also give away free gun safety locks.

“It gives a us chance to come and engage with positive interaction with the community and other law enforcement agencies in a comfortable indoor environment which takes the weather out of the equation. They’re also having a live band, and a multitude of vendors,” Davis said. “Not only will residents from Roanoke Rapids, Weldon and other areas of the county attend this event, we feel more of our citizens will attend because of the overall environment and experience.”

Hasty said he looks forward to the event, which this year will feature Jim Quick and Coastline. “It’s always an exciting time of the year. It’s a chance to touch base with the community in a positive light.”

North Carolina Wildlife Enforcement officers are expected to be at the event and the state Highway Patrol has been invited, Hasty said. “I think it’s a good opportunity to come out, meet fellow citizens and get to know each other.”

Littleton

The Littleton event is being sponsored by the police department and Citizens on Patrol.

It will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the town hall parking lot.

The Tim Cifers Band and DJ AK will perform.

There will be ice cream, snacks, hot dogs and beverages at the event.

Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.
