Since a May deluge, Roanoke Rapids City Council was forced to hold all its meetings in the first floor conference room of city hall.

The rains, which soaked the floors of the Lloyd Andrews City Meeting Hall with an inch to an inch and a half ofwater, also moved the congregate meals, Meals on Wheels and senior programs to the Chaloner Recreation Center, Parks and Recreation Director John Simeon said. The building also serves as a concessions and restroom facility during Fridays in the Park. “There was a lot of rain. We had four inches of rain within an hour.”

The rain penetrated behind the walls where council sits during meetings and spread water across the expanse of the building, which is located beside the post office. Water damaged ceiling tiles and the dais where council sits during meetings.

The building sustained approximately $28,000 in damages and now work is ongoing, Simeon said, to hopefully have the building ready for council use again by, if not the second September meeting, then the first October meeting.

When the renovations are completed council and the public will see a different configuration than before.

The dais will be U-shaped where council can hear and see each other better, Simeon said. Each council member will have a monitor at their desk that runs off high definition multimedia interface that will also have monitors on the left and right walls so the public can view presentations better.

New carpet and furniture will be installed. Larger gutters are being installed. “We had a structural engineer give us advice on how to handle that situation,” Simeon said.

Simeon said the renovations should improve the environment for the public and council. “It's going to be better for the public to view council meetings and better for those looking at presentations.”
