The first significant amount of methamphetamine in the area was seized Friday, along with almost two pounds of marijuana.

“We're starting to receive complaints of meth in the Highway 48 area and trying to put a stop to that,” Lieutenant Anzell Harris of the Halifax County Sheriff's Office said this morning.

Harris said the man arrested, 35-year-old Mack Donald Taylor Jr. of Roanoke Rapids, was quiet about the meth. “He had seller amounts and we've been having complaints of meth and were following up on those complaints. We're still trying to find the source of the supply.”

The events that led to Taylor's arrest began shortly after 2:15 p.m. Deputy J. Keeter, a sheriff's office canine handler, was in the Keener Drive area on a warrant service and Agent D.C. Dickens, who went to assist, noticed a vehicle back into a ditch and leave at a high rate of speed.

Dickens stopped the vehicle and identified Taylor as the driver. Dickens smelled marijuana coming from inside the vehicle and told Taylor to stay inside as he waited for assistance.

Taylor drove off and went to the AA Mart on Highway 48 and was stopped again.

The haul.

During the search of the vehicle, with assistance from Brody, Keeter's dog, deputies found approximately 832 grams of marijuana, items of drug paraphernalia, 15 grams of meth and $635 in currency.

Dickens arrested and charged Taylor with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana, felony possession of marijuana, possession with intent to sell and deliver methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia and resisting a public officer.

Taylor received a $25,000 bond and has an October 2 court date.

Harris said this was the first time narcotics agents had dealt with Taylor.
